high throughput individual testing

The Challenge

Breaking PCBs out of a panel (known as depaneling) involves snapping or cutting the boards along pre-designed perforated tabs ("mouse bites") or V-scored grooves. This step and the subsequent cleaning imposes some risk of damage to the PCBA that can't be ignored. Therefore it is generally preferred to test PCBAs after depanelization. Individual testing also generally provides better access for side-approach. On the other hand, testing in a panel provides an easy way to (1) test multiple devices in parallel, (2) align the devices, and (3) reduce handling time while doing that.

The Challenge

Our Solution

EVAjig created cradles, custom-made pcb carrier plates that can be used for parallel-individual testing. By using cradles, multiple PCBAs can be arranged in a manner optimized for testing, including for side-approach. Testing will also not rely on the panelization-preferences of the EMS, making it easier to produce and test at multiple sites. Cradles use either the PCB outline or alignment holes to ensure precision alignement with the EVAjig. They can be 3D printed for maximum versatility or milled for use in larger quantities. At the same time, cradles are used to standardize the precision alignment system.

The Results

EVAjig implemented cradles for a device that had a battery that was larger than the PCB and which needed to be produced and tested in large quantities. The cradles enabled the client to test 12 devices in parallel, with batteries inserted such that a subsequent (manual) operation could be eliminated. The client could exchange a cradle on the EVAjig in seconds, instead of having to individually exchange 12 devices.
